If you like to go out chasing waterfalls, there are numerous waterfalls to visit around Melbourne, particularly in the scenic Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. Jump in the car and explore the region's stunning landscape, which includes vivid rainforests, majestic mountains, flowing rivers, and serene estuaries. Some very stunning waterfalls are unexpectedly close to this area, which also serves as Melbourne's primary water catchment area.
These waterfalls below are close to Melbourne, and some are even close together, allowing you to view many falls on one road trip. Check out some of our favourite recommendations below, listed in alphabetical order.
Located approximately 200 kilometres and a scenic 3-hour drive from Melbourne, you'll find the most breathtaking waterfalls in Victoria. The long drive to Agnes Falls is worth it, where you can be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of the blue gum forest and witness the majestic falls as they cascade 59 metres, gracefully flowing over rocks and plunging into a mesmerising canyon. This picturesque location is also the perfect place for a picnic among the stunning scenery. Agnes Falls, nestled in the Strzelecki Ranges, is a paradise for those who love picnicking and observing wildlife – so be sure to keep an eye out! This stop is an absolute must for anyone visiting Southern Gippsland. Stroll the 200 metres from the parking lot to the viewing platform, immersing yourself in the breathtaking protected wilderness that surrounds you. Beauchamp Falls is truly a sight to behold, rivalling the beauty of the waterfalls near the Great Ocean Road, and it is no wonder it is popular with many locals and tourists. The shape of the falls is truly stunning, with its surroundings adorned by towering cliff walls covered in lush ferns, creating a captivating and dramatic ambiance. Immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of the rainforest as you make your way to this hidden gem. And for the adventurous souls, a refreshing dip awaits at the foot of the cascading falls. Beauchamp Falls is a breathtaking waterfall nestled within the magnificent Great Otway National Park in Victoria. Getting there and back only takes about an hour, and you'll be pleased to know that there are far fewer steps compared to the nearby Hopetoun Falls. Discover a scenic walking trail starting from the picnic area, leading you deep into the enchanting forest where you can witness the majestic 20-meter waterfall of Beauchamp Falls. If you're into camping, you'll be thrilled to know that there are plenty of free camping options near the Great Ocean Road. Experience the breathtaking beauty of mountain ash forests and lush ferns on this incredible walking track. At the base of the falls, you'll find a decently sized pool. However, be aware that there are some logs and rocks scattered about, which slightly limit the swimming area. Therefore, it offers more of a plunge pool experience rather than a place for a full swim. The pool hardly ever basks in sunlight, resulting in refreshingly cold water throughout the year. Entering the water is a breeze, just be mindful of the potential hazards like slippery rocks and logs.
Have you ever wondered what it's like to see an enchanting view behind a waterfall, without the need to take a daring plunge into the waters below? If you've ever thought about it, Bindaree Falls is the perfect waterfall to explore. It features a wooden observation deck that allows you to get up close and personal with the cascading falls, creating a mesmerising sight right before your eyes. Regrettably, vehicle access to the falls is restricted from June to November due to seasonal track closures in the High Country. Set in the serene Australian bush, imagine standing on a wooden viewing platform, witnessing the majestic sight of water cascading down from the rocks above. During the months of November to around mid-June, you can easily reach the falls by taking the Circuit Road that goes around Mt Stirling. Just keep driving along the Circuit Road for about 10 kilometres until you see the sign for Bindaree Road on your left. It's a pretty straightforward route to get to Craig's Hut. Take a left turn and keep going for approximately five kilometres, stopping right before the bridge. There is a brief walking trail that leads up to the falls from this point.

Erskine Falls is a beloved destination, known for its breathtaking beauty. Embark on a scenic 15-minute journey along the Great Ocean Road, just inland from Lorne. The trek down is relatively short and not too challenging. While the options for activities are limited, the breathtaking views of the waterfalls are truly remarkable. Although the steps may pose a slight challenge for young children to ascend, this waterfall remains one of the most suitable options for families near Melbourne. Erskine Falls is undoubtedly the top choice among the numerous waterfalls in the coastal area surrounding the Great Ocean Road. This magnificent waterfall, located just a short 10-kilometer drive from Lorne, gracefully tumbles down approximately 30 metres into the breathtaking ravine of the Erskine River. There are two lookouts that offer breathtaking views: the top lookout is just a short walk from the parking lot, while the lower observation point requires a bit more effort to reach the base of the falls.
A favourite in Victoria, witness the breathtaking beauty of Hopetoun falls, as they gracefully cascade 30 metres into the Aire River, nestled within the vibrant rainforest of Otway National Park. Visitors can make their way down a set of stairs to reach a viewing platform located right at the base of the falls. Prepare yourself for an exhilarating experience as you embrace the refreshing mist from the falls. The leisurely walk should only take about half an hour to finish. You have two options to experience the waterfalls: either take a short stroll to the viewing platform just 20 metres away, or embark on a scenic descent down 200 stairs through the lush forest to reach the base of the waterfalls. This platform offers a comfortable bench where you can relax, enjoy the beautiful views, and give your knees a well-deserved break.
Visiting Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians National Park will leave you in awe of the stunning view of water cascading into a large pool below at Mackenzie Falls. Visiting the Grampians is an absolute must for anyone in Victoria, as there are some truly breathtaking sights to behold. The hike to the falls covers a distance of approximately two kilometres, making it a manageable round trip. Plan for about an hour and a half to fully experience the scenic adventure. Reaching the base of the falls can be quite a challenge for little children due to the steep descent. On a beautiful day, those fortunate enough can dip their feet in the river after a challenging hike. MacKenzie Falls is a stunning destination that offers the opportunity to experience its year-round waterfalls. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy the refreshing water and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. While you're there, you may want to explore the famous Venus Pools and some of the park's other equally breathtaking waterfalls.
Hiking to La La Falls may not be a long journey, but the steady uphill slope provides a satisfying vertical challenge without becoming too daunting. The beauty of the forest is simply breathtaking; once you set foot on the track, you'll find yourself enveloped by a lush, verdant canopy. The trail meanders alongside the babbling Four Mile Creek, playfully crossing it a few times with charming stone bridges. Mason Falls is a great place for a spacious picnic at Kinglake National Park, just a short distance from Melbourne, that will surely delight your family and friends. You can easily combine these short walks to create a longer day walk.
Explore the breathtaking Olinda Falls via the Olinda Falls Picnic Area, conveniently situated beyond Mount Dandenong. Indulge in a delightful picnic amidst the tranquil surroundings, while being on the lookout for the abundant lyrebirds that inhabit the park. It's a breeze to reach Olinda Falls on foot, via a 15-minute walk. The viewing platform is a mere 350 metres away from the base of the falls. There are two sets of falls, the upper and lower falls, that are separated by a distance of 180 metres. Each set has its own viewing platforms and walking trails that lead to the creek. Prioritise exploring the upper falls before dedicating more time to the taller, multi-level lower falls. Witness the breathtaking view of the lower falls from both sides and experience the exhilaration of walking across a steel bridge that stretches over the creek, allowing you to see the water flowing beneath your feet. There are fantastic viewing decks in front of the falls, offering breathtaking perspectives of both the upper and lower falls.

The alpine region of Victoria offers more than just winter activities. Located halfway up Mount Buffalo, approximately 3.5 hours from Melbourne, Rollasons Falls offers a refreshing oasis for visitors to unwind and relax. With over 90 kilometres of scenic hiking paths to explore, this picturesque spot is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. You have the option to witness both the upper and lower falls by taking a quick 3-kilometer round trip from the Rollasons Falls Picnic Area. The stunning pool nestled at the foot of Rollasons Falls is an absolute gem, perfect for a refreshing swim. It's the star attraction of this beautiful waterfall. You'll find a handful of petite cliffs perfect for jumping into the water, as well as some sun-kissed rocks ideal for lounging. Make sure to thoroughly check the water for any obstacles like rocks or trees before you jump in. If you're into exploring scenic spots and enjoying a refreshing dip, this trail on Mount Buffalo is perfect for you. It's an ideal way to spend a couple of hours in Victoria's Alpine region during the warmer months. Just keep in mind that the 2km uphill walk back can be more challenging than the descent! Walking down to the falls is a picturesque experience, with a track that winds through a beautifully shaded forest filled with mature Eucalypt trees and a vibrant understory. The path becomes steeper as you make your way towards the falls, and the terrain becomes more challenging as you reach the junction that leads to the Upper and Lower falls (each approximately 400m away from this point).
If you're looking to explore some more stunning waterfalls near Lorne, Sheoak Falls is definitely worth a visit. It's a popular stop along the Great Ocean Road, and for good reason. Sheoak Falls can be found in the stunning Great Otway National Park, a short distance from the charming town of Lorne. There is a 700-meter walk with steps that takes you from the parking lot to a beautiful pool, where the waters of Sheoak Creek gracefully cascade down 15 metres into the water. Prepare to embark on a journey through lush forests and serene coastal woodlands as you make your way to the magnificent falls. If you're new to hiking, you'll find the walk to be short and manageable. And for those looking for a longer adventure, you can continue up the trail to Swallow Cave. If you're fortunate enough, you may catch a glimpse of the adorable and slender swallows called Tree Martins constructing their nests using mud from the nearby creek. Embarking on the Swallow Cave trek, especially after rainfall, offers a truly remarkable opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Sheoak Falls. If you're up for more adventure, there are several other waterfalls in the area worth exploring. Henderson Falls, Cumberland Falls, Phantom Falls, and Erskine Falls are just a few of them. However, keep in mind that for some of these, you'll need to get back in the car.

These falls are just a short distance away from the parking lot. Begin your walk on Sherbrooke Lodge Road, with the option to start and end at either the O'Donohue Picnic Grounds or the Sherbrooke Picnic Grounds. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the well-equipped picnic areas, where a variety of walking trails await. Explore the enchanting rainforest filled with majestic Mountain Ash, stringybark trees, lush tree ferns, and the mesmerising sight of cascading waterfalls. The trails are clearly marked and the rainforest steals the show on this walk; the waterfalls are tucked away and modest, concealed by the lush tree ferns.
One of the most beloved waterfalls near Melbourne is Steavenson Falls in Marysville. This impressive waterfall stands at a staggering height of 84 metres, making it one of the tallest in Victoria. These breathtaking waterfalls, nestled in the scenic Yarra Valley just a short drive from Melbourne, are perfect for families with young children and provide a truly picturesque setting for capturing unforgettable photos. Steavenson Falls is an absolutely breathtaking cascade, especially after a good rainfall. This magnificent waterfall in Victoria cascades down in three breathtaking stages, surrounded by towering cliffs that form the river valley. Located just 3 kilometres from Marysville Township, the falls are a captivating sight, especially when they are illuminated at night until 11 p.m. This adds an extra allure for visitors who choose to stay over the weekend or during the middle of the week.
Trentham Falls is an impressive sight, with its cascading waters plunging 32 metres over ancient basalt columns. The winter season adds a touch of awe to the scenery, as the rain intensifies the flow. Immersed in a breathtaking natural setting, the enchanting falls can be found within the Coliban River Scenic Reserve. This protected area preserves the pristine beauty of the surrounding bushland, adorned with moss-covered rocks and a variety of native flora such as manna gum, messmate, narrow-leaved peppermint, and vibrant spring wildflowers.
Access to the top or base of the falls is restricted due to the presence of unstable and steep cliffs. Bring along a picnic basket and savour the picnic area nestled in the serene bush surroundings, just a brief stroll away from the carpark and viewing area. You can reach Trentham Falls by taking Trentham Scenic Reserve Road. Located near Daylesford, around 90 minutes from Melbourne, the Trentham Falls stand as Victoria's longest single drop waterfalls.
Wombelano Falls provides a delightful 1.5-kilometer walking path, allowing visitors to embark on a three-kilometer roundtrip journey to admire the majestic 30-meter falls from a picturesque viewing point. With a few steeper sections that might get your heart pumping, this trail is perfect for people of all ages and fitness levels. For those who adore nature, this place is an ideal day trip as it's just 65 kilometres away from Melbourne. Despite the presence of potholes and puddles, Extons Road is passable for 2WD cars. Access from Eucalyptus Road is best suited for 4WD vehicles. Explore the enchanting beauty of the tall eucalypt forest and lush gullies that lead to the breathtaking Wombelano Falls. Experience the breathtaking views from the lookout as you witness the majestic falls cascading 90 metres into the gully below. Some might feel a tinge of disappointment upon reaching the waterfall where the views can be obstructed by trees and there is no authorised way to reach the base of the falls. The viewing platform is situated about 50-100 metres from the falls, delicately positioned on the edge of the gully. While some waterfall-chasers prefer to skip this one and visit some of the other waterfalls around Melbourne (or Masons Falls nearby for a clear view )for a more enjoyable waterfall experience, it is still worth a visit.
